The sea was calm, an undisturbed canvas that stretched endlessly away from us on all sides. But I had a nagging feeling that something was amiss. It had been days since we last encountered any kind of life form; birds no longer dotted the skies, fish no longer jumped playfully out of the water. The sky grew dark and ominous, and it felt like hundreds of unseen eyes stared at us with evil intent.
Then we saw it; another ship, the silhouette of which seemed to be suddenly engulfed by a heavy mist only to be clear again moments later. As we sailed closer, we heard the screams. Sailors were throwing themselves overboard, as if fleeing from some haunting presence.
My men stared at the spectacle incredulously, and I decided to turn away from the doomed ship; I wouldn't risk our lives because of some mysterious calamity. As we sailed away, the most surreal roar we ever heard erupted from the water around the doom-stricken ship, and a gigantic whale-shaped beast swallowed the vessel and all of its men.
